Marvin Sapp's Hit Single “Never Would Have Made It” is the Longest #1 Song In the History Of Gospel Radio and the #1 Record at Urban Station KJLH in Los Angeles

New York, NY – January 25, 2008 – Marvin Sapp’s “Never Would Have Made It” has maintained the #1 spot at Gospel radio for six consecutive months – making it the longest #1 song in the history of the NielsenBDS Gospel chart.

Additionally, “Never Would Have Made It” is the #1 song at KJLH in Los Angeles, getting more spins than singles by artists including Rashaun Patterson and Alicia Keys.  It is the only gospel song in the country that is #1 at a mainstream station.  KJLH’s Aundrae Russell says “‘Never Would Have Made It’ is a life changing song…it is absolutely a 7 day a week song.”

“Never Would Have Made It” is the first single off of Sapp's third CD THIRSTY, which debuted #1, spent a total of 19 weeks in the #1 sales position and is currently the #2 album on Billboard’s Gospel chart.
Marvin Sapp delivers show stopping performances of his runaway hit January 27 on BET’s Celebration of Gospel, and on the nationally syndicated Stellar Gospel Music Awards.

The Legendary Clark Sisters Win Big Taking Home 3 Grammys At The 50th Annual Grammy Awards

NASHVILLE – (February 11, 2008)It took the 50th Anniversary of the Grammy© Awards, the gospel events leading up to it and the fact that a pioneering group in the popularization of Gospel was embarking upon a “Reunion Tour” for Detroit’s legendary Clark Sisters to make a long overdue splash at “music’s biggest night.” The Clark Sisters ( ElbertinaTwinkie” Clark-Terrell, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Jacky Clark-Chisolm, and Karen Clark-Sheard) took home trophies in three major categories: Best Traditional Gospel Album (for Live - One Last Time), Best Gospel Performance (for “Blessed & Highly Favored” – which tied with Aretha Franklin & Mary J. Blige’s “Never Gonna Break My Faith”) and Best Gospel Song (for Karen Clark-Sheard’s composition “Blessed & Highly Favored”). The Gospel Hall of Fame members were also recipients in June 2007 of the esteemed President’s Merit Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Grammy Salute to Gospel. After two decades-plus of faithful service, these marked the quartet’s very first well-deserved Grammys.

“We feel overjoyed, knowing there is hope no matter how long the wait is in receiving what God has for you, says Dorinda Clark Cole. It is our time!”

As if the honors were not enough, The Clark Sisters were also featured in the prime time telecast on Sunday night in an all-star medley singing their classic “You Brought the Sunshine,” the first crossover gospel/pop hit to become the #1 Billboard album in 1983. The superstar siblings performed in the company of the legendary Aretha Franklin, as well as, with Bebe Winans, Israel and New Breed, the Madison Bumble Bees and Trin-i-tee 5:7, earning an overwhelming standing ovation for one of the most unforgettable performances of the magical evening.

Says Karen Clark-Sheard, “Performing with The Queen of Soul and our peers was an unforgettable night that I will always remember.   It was a great honor to be recognized by the music industry’s most prestige organization.”

2007-08 has been a banner year for the ladies. The Clark Sisters are in the midst of heavy promotion for their very successful reunion CD/DVD for the EMI Gospel label, Live - One Last Time, their first project together since focusing on solo careers following the release of 1994’s Miracle. The generous, 17-song Live (produced by Donald Lawrence and recorded in July 2006 before a sell-out crowd of 6,000 in Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center) has been a fixture in the Top 10 of Billboard magazine’s Top Gospel Albums chart for 43 weeks (including the #1 slot) since its release on April 10, 2007. The group took home five Stellar Awards in January for the historic reunion release. March will find them embarking on the second leg of their breathlessly awaited concert tour.

After a voice change and time off for college at Princeton University, "A Second Coming" is Wilson's first CD release since 1999's Growing Up and it's a departure. A consortium of gospel dynamos dominated this year’s list of nominees with the innovative Clark Sisters, gospel newcomer DeWayne Woods and the legendary Tramaine Hawkins comprising the night’s biggest winners.

The Clark Sisters, credited with bringing gospel music to the mainstream, snagged four Stellar Awards for “Artist of the Year,” “Group/Duo of the Year,” “CD of the Year,” and “Traditional Group/Duo of the Year.” The group’s latest reunion recording Live-One Last Time has dominated airwaves and record sales.

Following close behind The Clark Sisters was gospel newcomer, DeWayne Woods. Woods’ project Introducing DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet, picked up three awards, including “New Artist of the Year” and “Male Vocalist of the Year.”

CeCe Winans In addition to sharing co-hosting duties, both Kirk Franklin and CeCe Winans received honors of their own. Franklin delivered a powerful performance of political satire with a spiritual twist, doing what he does best – bringing the crowd to its feet with his daring hit single, Declaration (This Is It), a song examining struggle and self-doubt in an effort to find inner peace. Franklin also sewed up his nomination in the “Special Event CD of the Year” category taking home yet another Stellar Award.

Winans was saluted by contemporary Christian artist Amy Grant and R&B singer Heather Headley with the Chevrolet Most Notable Achievement Award for pioneering work in songwriting, outstanding performances and record sales success in the gospel music industry.

In accepting the award Winans said, “I must thank my mom and dad for teaching me and my siblings about the greatest gift – Jesus Christ.” Later in the evening, Winans offered a stirring musical anthem.

Pioneers of traditional gospel, such as Edwin Hawkins and Shirley Caesar, brought their energy and encouragement to a new generation of artists with their strong presence and spiritual maturity. Acknowledged at this year’s awards program with The Walgreens Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legends Award were The Caravans and The Barrett Sisters for their long standing impact and influence on gospel music.

The legendary Tramaine Hawkins solidified her place in gospel history by receiving the distinguished James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award for her major impact in the development and advancement of gospel music. Her latest project, I Never Lost My Praise, garnered her nominations in four categories, in which she easily grabbed two for “Female Vocalist of the Year,” and “Traditional Female of the Year.”

Singer Smokie Norful accompanied by his piano and backed by a string orchestra delivered the soulful Run To You, giving the audience an intimate moment of reflection with God.

As in past shows, the Stellar Awards brought some of the best talent in gospel music to the stage. The show jumped off with an electrifying performance by Bishop Noel Jones and the City of Refuge Choir that brought the audience to its feet. The show’s opening number started what would be a grand night of inspiration and celebration.

Powerful high energy and moving performances by Beverly Crawford and Ricky Dillard turned the Grand Ole      Opry House into a tabernacle of praise. DeWayne Woods, Marvin Sapp and the Rance Allen Group were also highlights of this year’s show, along with the legendary Clark Sisters and the gospel urban sounds of Fred Hammond.

Juanita Bynum Fights Back: Prophetess Issues a Boiling Statement After Estranged Husband Bishop Thomas Weeks, III Holds Second Press Conference

By Mona Austin

Thomas Weeks, III held a press conference on Thanksgiving Eve to reiterate his innocence in the alleged August beating of his wife, Prophetess Juanita Bynum.

Pursuant to an exclusive "one-sided" Essence magazine article that he feels painted him as a villain, he is still attempting to clear his name. In his version of the story, his estranged wife hit him.  He also implies that the bruises on Bynum may have been self-inflicted.

"I know what happened that night. I was there ... and those marks are not from me," Weeks asserts.

Appearing on WDEF-TV (CBS-Chatanooga) Weeks' attorney said his client initially was interested in reconciliation "but at this point he understands that doesn't seem possible."  "In Georgia," he explained, "you don't have to have grounds for a divorce other than one party saying 'to me, the marriage is over."

Although the Prophetess has repeatedly professed her undying love for her husband of 5 years, she told Essence magazine (Dec. 2007), "I'm not sure, not 150 percent sure that the person I saw in the parking lot that night won't ever show up again."

Despite being indicted by a Fulton County (GA) grand jury for simple battery among other charges, the Bishop denies claims that he was ever violent toward his soon-to-be ex-wife  and insists that she was physically aggressive toward him that night and previously in New York. (see video clip here.)

Bynum retorted with the following statement:
"Bishop Weeks is doing exactly what he promised he would do and that is, "TRY" to destroy my name with lies, fabrications and exaggerations. His behavior is to be expected! Yet, the facts and photos that were taken by the district attorney's office of me two days later and the doctor's report from two different hospitals could not be forged nor entered into the court system as legal documents for evidence, otherwise the District Attorney's office would not have been able to pass down an indictment. When it comes to facts the courts are different from the media. In court you have to present real facts and witnesses run the risk of perjuring themselves, therefore I cordially invite all of Bishop Week's witnesses to the stand.

I am not the one on trial, therefore I have nothing to defend.  How can I choke myself until the blood comes to the surface of my skin and then kick myself in five other places, one of which could not be photographed because it was in a private area [?]  At this stage of my ministry/career with major projects pending, I would not have had any motive to stage my own attack and bring worldwide negative press to myself. Having been in ministry for 20 years and reaching world wide status prior to me meeting Bishop Weeks I am confident in the power of truth! I was Juanita Bynum when I walked into this marriage and I will continue to be Juanita Bynum as I exit from this marriage in spite of all false allegations that have come against my name. As I have stated from the beginning, this too shall pass!"

Bishop Weeks continues to expand his ministry, while Juanita Bynum has just released an "un-cut" DVD and is working on a new ministry for victims of domestic violence.

Be Be Winans Sues Former Manger for Theft, Breach of Contract

Benjamin "Be Be" Winans' relationship with business manager ended earlier this year when he suspected the man was taking advantage of him financially. Now Winans, the youngest of the famed gospel family the Winans and duet partner with sister Ce Ce, is suing Eric Peterson for $6 million. The Nashville post reports that the lawsuit, filed recently in Tennessee where Winans resides, cites breach of contract, fraud and fudiciary damage as the basis for suing the man who handled his business affairs for the past 5 years. After discovering the defendant opened a line of credit at Wachovia Bank in his name but diverted the funds to himself, Winans wants to know where exactly all the funds he exchanged with Peterson went. View the actual lawsuit here.
